Meet Rachel, Owner of Skylight Kitchen
Skylight Kitchen was an idea in my head for a number of years and so I was excited to take the plunge and get it set up in 2014. Since then I have been lucky to welcome both adults and children through the door to enjoy cooking some delicious food and hopefully learn new skills and experience new flavours. I have always had a love of food and was lucky to grow up with a mum who was an excellent Cordon Bleu-trained cook. This gave me a love of spending time in the kitchen which has always been the heart of the home.
After university, I lived in London & having worked for a number of different organisations, decided in 2003 to have a change of direction and undertook a professional six month, intensive diploma at Leiths School of Food & Wine. I absolutely loved the course which taught classical cooking methods and the skills to create delicious contemporary food and I obtained a First Class Pass. Following the course I freelanced as a chef, working for catering companies as well as for myself, producing food for canapé parties, office lunches and business functions. I also freelanced for Family Circle magazine which involved recipe testing, food styling for photo shoots and researching & writing copy for inclusion in the monthly magazine.
Following the birth of my first child, we left London and moved to West Wales to run a self-catering cottage complex. Whilst there I had my second child and it was a wonderful environment for our young family to start to grow. In December 2012 we sold the business and relocated to the South Coast. I took a job working in the local school kitchen which highlighted to me the difficulties of encouraging children to try eating new things. Through my own children and their friends, I have found they are much more willing to try things when they have had a hand in making them themselves. I am keen to use my skills to teach both adults and children how easy and more cost effective it is to produce delicious, healthy food at home. Learning to cook is a life skill which you never lose & can be passed on through the generations. Creating and eating food is a social experience and one of life’s pleasures.
Whether you are a complete novice or looking to increase your repertoire of skills, I hope that by coming to Skylight Kitchen you will leave with a love of home cooked food & happy tummies.
Skylight Kitchen has been registered with Christchurch Council & in addition to my food qualification & experience, I have certificates in Food Hygiene, Health & Safety & full public liability insurance.
